The Colorado Rockies’ roller coaster has hit another peak. After a series of losses, the Rox completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with an 8-7 win at home on Sunday.
The hero of the day was Dexter Fowler, who crashed into the center-field wall chasing down Alfonso Soriano’s ninth-inning drive.
While Fowler (pictured) was instrumental in the Rockies’ win, he also bruised his left hip and ribs on the wall while snagging the sacrifice fly, meaning he could miss some game time (via The Associated Press).
The sweep of the Cubs at Coors Field was the first against the team in Denver since a four-game sweep in July 1997, according to The Denver Post. The high point of the series came Friday night, when the Rockies thrashed the Cubs 17-2.
But if you still think the Rockies are World Series material, the Post’s Mark Kiszla is sure to disappoint you. He says Colorado’s chances of making the playoffs “seem no better than 25 percent” given that San Francisco, Philly, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles are all ahead of the Rockies in the wild-card standings.
Nonetheless, “although franchise owners Dick and Charlie Monfort didn’t see fit to increase the payroll at the trade deadline, Colorado players refused to quit. Big props to them,” he writes.
