I’m always on the hunt for a good bowl of soup, and my latest find is the Back Bowl Soup Company in Winter Park’s base village. The year-old restaurant serves several made-from-scratch selections each day, along with a limited breakfast menu, sandwiches (including an enticing grilled cheese with green chiles), and salads.
When I visited, the offerings included chicken green chile, curry-butternut squash, New England clam chowder, and mulligatawny (an Anglo-Indian soup that gained noteriety on Seinfeld for being Kramer’s favorite). The best of the bunch was the dynamic mulligatawny, with its robust chicken and curry flavors.
All the soups needed a couple shakes of salt, but the flavors were otherwise well developed and comforting. For the best value, order the bread bowl ($8.50). The soups ($6.75 a bowl), while served in generous portions, don’t come with a side of bread.
Tip: If you’re just stopping by for lunch, park on level three of the parking garage, where you get 45 minutes of free parking.
