There seem to be more goings than comings in the realm of city politics lately. Most notably, Denver 1st District City Councilwoman Paula Sandoval will not seek reelection to her northwest Denver seat in May because she wants to spend time with her husband, former state legislator Paul Sandoval, who has received news he may have cancer. “I wanted to make this decision in time for candidates to become eligible for the May ballot,” she says (Denver Post). The Sandovals own the popular Tamales by La Casita restaurant, and Paul, one of the city’s top power brokers, has often been consulted by top-ranking Latinos considering bids for public office, including former U.S. Senator and current Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. Paula says more tests are being conducted to determine if her husband has a lymphoma or pancreatic cancer.
Meanwhile, Cher Roybal Haavind has stepped down from her position as the communications director for state Senator Chris Romer’s Denver mayoral campaign, issuing a cliché on the way out: She has decided “to pursue other opportunities” and doesn’t elaborate (also via the Post). Deputy campaign director Zach Knaus will assume the role of spokesman.
