Add to the long list of alleged police brutality cases in recent years—including one from 2009 that made headlines earlier this week—yet another questionable beating caught on video. This time, Mark Ashford says he was beaten black and blue by two officers one day while walking his dogs near 20th and Little Raven streets near LoDo, writes Fox 31. “They punched him and pinned him up against the fence and forced his head into the concrete,” says Ashford’s attorney, Will Hart, calling the situation, which was caught on camera, a clear case of excessive force. Hart says Ashford apparently upset police after approaching a pulled-over driver who police suspected ran a stop sign. Ashford told the driver he saw the driver stop and would be willing to testify for the driver in court. Police then demanded Ashford’s identification and detained him. When he tried to take a picture to document the incident, officers allegedly beat him and then charged him with interference and resisting arrest—charges that were later dropped, Ashford’s attorney says, because police had no legal reason to stop him, take his ID, or detain him. An excessive-force complaint was filed against both officers, but neither the department nor the office of Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, which states that aspects of the investigation continue, will say whether they have been disciplined (via The Denver Post).
