When we last checked in on the case of Steven Romero, the man accused of tying a rope around the neck of Buddy, a German shepherd mix, and dragging him to death behind a truck, tens of thousands of people were petitioning for Romero (pictured) to receive the maximum sentence for his alleged actions last December. Now, Romero, who is charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty in a scheme to steal and kill Buddy with his sister, Melissa Lockhart, has reached a deal with prosecutors in which he will plead guilty, according Grand Junction’s Daily Sentinel. The details of the plea have not been revealed, but Romero had faced up to three years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Meanwhile, Buddy’s family says they still miss their dog. “He would just lay there and the kids would love on him,” owner Sacha Leber tells The Denver Post. “He was such a big dog he couldn’t be a lap dog even though he wanted to be. He would lay his head on your lap, then a paw, and then try to climb on top of you. He was a very awesome dog.”
