Around some Thanksgiving tables, the most contentious topic isn’t politics, it’s pie. Your aunt is an apple enthusiast, your mother demands pecan, and your cousin insists key lime is seasonal (this isn’t Florida, Joey).
So to please everyone’s palate, you might find yourself procuring quite a few pies for your picky family. Pass on the grunt work to the professionals this year by ordering your dessert spread from a local bakery. Whether you opt for ready-to-eat or take-and-bake pies, you’ll need to act fast because ordering deadlines are quickly approaching. Hence, here are some of our favorite local spots around the Denver metro area to grab a pie (or three) in time for Turkey Day.
Shamane’s Bakery & Cafe
- Order by: November 20
- Address: 2825 Wilderness Place, Suite 800, Boulder
- Phone: 303-417-9338
While your mind might jump to dessert when thinking about pies, pastry chef Shamane Simons reminds us not to skip the savory kind. Instead of toiling over a turkey that somehow always ends up dry, order a turkey, chicken, or veggie pot pie from Shamane’s Bakery and Cafe. For a uniquely Colorado take on Turkey Day, fill the table with her flaky handheld pasties filled with bison sourced from the Centennial State. If you don’t have enough room for a whole slice of something sweet, pick up Shamane’s mini pie sample box ($20), which comes with apple, pecan, cherry, and sweet potato chocolate ginger.
The Pie Queen
- Order by: November 20 for plant-based pies, November 24 for pie packages
- Address: pickup locations vary
- Phone: 720-763-4464
Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, so it only seems right that your pie purchase gives back. When you order a plant-based treat—pumpkin, apple, or blueberry pie—from Denver’s resident drag queen turned pastry chef Chocolatina Q Dessert, a portion of the proceeds will go to the animals at Broken Shovels Farm Sanctuary in Henderson. If you’re going to have the whole extended family in town, you’ll need the Thanksgiving Pie Package ($50), which comes with three six-inch pies (pumpkin, pecan, and sour cream apple), homemade caramel sauce, and banana bread. Meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time? We’d splurge on the Golden Thanksgiving Pie Package ($75), which throws in a savory quiche, apple butter, and Italian cherry bonbons. Oh, and we’d claim the bonbons are homemade—the pie queen won’t tell.
Granny Scott’s Pie Shop
- Order by: November 20 for gluten-free and sugar-free orders, November 22 for all other orders
- Address: 3333 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Suite C-107, Lakewood
- Phone: 303-986-6240
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, Granny Scott’s Pie Shop has a menu of more than 30 pies—the largest variety available in the Denver metro area. Choose from classic fillings like pumpkin, pecan, caramel apple, cherry, and banana cream or surprise your holiday crew with more creative options like Swiss chocolate mousse or grasshopper. For November, Granny Scott’s is also offering a caramel-pecan-chocolate turtle pie, as well as pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.
The Huckleberry
- Order by: November 22
- Address: 700 Main St., Louisville
- Phone: 303-666-8020
A beloved brunch destination, the Huckleberry is also a trusted Louisville source for fresh pastries, breads, cookies, cakes—and pies. As it has for 30 years, the restaurant will offer six- and nine-inch peach huckleberry, cherry, apple crumble, and pumpkin pies, as well as an indulgent chocolate bourbon pecan variety. Vegans and gluten-free foodies don’t have to sit out dessert; the Huckleberry preps pies for them, too.
Hinman Pie
- Order by: November 23
- Address: pick up at 2630 W. 38th Ave.
- Phone: 720-333-0554
If one of your picky eaters refuses to eat pie without ice cream, you’ll want to place an order from Hinman Pie. This season, owner John Hinman has partnered with High Point Creamery to offer a Dream Pack ($55): a nine-inch pie paired with two pints of High Point ice cream. Mix and match pie flavors like salted maple, pecan, and cherry with decadent scoops of brown sugar cinnamon, Tahitian vanilla, salted caramel, or whiskey and pistachio brittle ice cream.
Katherine’s French Bakery & Café
- Order by: November 24
- Address: 728 S. University Blvd.
- Phone: 303-282-5888
You may not be able to afford a plane ticket to Paris this Thanksgiving, but you can still pretend you’re dining beneath the sparkling Eiffel Tower with French-inspired treats from this patisserie. Order adorable themed butter cookies shaped like turkeys and oak leaves or go full-on French with a bûche de Noël (otherwise known as a yule log). Don’t fret, traditionalists: Katherine’s also offers the classics including a pumpkin tart topped with pecan-cinnamon streusel. There’s even a key lime pie for Joey.
The Enchanted Oven
- Order by: November 24
- Address: 520 Zang St., Suite M, Broomfield
- Phone: 303-537-4864
Tucked away in a Broomfield strip mall, the Enchanted Oven is a Japanese-inspired bakery dishing everything from elaborate special-occasion cakes to bento box meals (available on Wednesdays). For Thanksgiving gatherings, the bakery offers kabocha pumpkin, apple, and cherry pies, along with side dishes like turkey meatballs, cranberry-walnut stuffing, kabocha pumpkin soup, and biscuits. Or, spice up your sides by swapping classic dinner rolls for a few of the bakery’s steamed pork buns.
