The Insider’s Guide to the 2021 MLB All-Star Game in Denver
Where to eat, drink, sleep, carouse, and fully soak up America's pastime during July's All-Star Week.
In James Earl Jones’ goosebump-inducing monologue in 1989’s Field of Dreams, his character says, in part, that “baseball has marked the time.” On April 2, 2021, that truism was boldly reinforced when Major League Baseball announced it would relocate its 2021 All-Star Game from Atlanta’s Truist Park in a sharp rebuke of recently passed voting laws in Georgia, which critics say disproportionately affect communities of color and President Joe Biden called “Jim Crow in the 21st century.” MLB said the laws didn’t square with its values as an organization and that it “fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box.” Time, marked.
Four days later, on April 6, MLB announced that it was moving the Midsummer Classic to the Mile High City. Commissioner of baseball Robert D. Manfred Jr. never said Colorado’s highly accessible yet secure elections had anything to do with the selection of Coors Field—MLB said something about the Rockies having already been in the bidding process for a future All-Star Game…blah, blah, blah—but we’d like to think our mail-in ballots and high voter turnout were at least part of the discussion.
Either way, Denverites are stoked about hosting their first All-Star Game in 23 years. The Mile High City is, of course, a very different town than the one in which Larry Walker roamed right field, Todd Helton manned first, and Vinny Castilla played the hot corner for the Blake Street Bombers. The city has grown up, expanded, and, yes, become a lot more compelling for locals and visitors alike. So while we’re excited to break a sweat in the All-Star 5K, catch a few dingers at the Home Run Derby, keep tabs on the first round of the MLB draft, and snag tickets to the game on July 13, we’re also thrilled to show the country everything Denver has to offer. Whether you’ve traveled here for the festivities or you’re just hyped about a good reason to get out of the house, we’re here to help you enjoy the pomp and circumstance of America’s favorite pastime.
