For many Coloradans, summertime in the Rocky Mountains means spending the weekends outside running, hiking, biking, swimming, or just generally recreating underneath our state’s generous amounts of sunshine. Some Coloradans choose to get their outdoor recreation fix by competing in some combination of these activities, which is fine by me. What’s not fine by me, though, is when Coloradans talk endlessly about their exhaustive training regimen or, post-race, detail their performance for weeks upon weeks. I explain all this in an essay in the July issue of 5280 titled Glory Gone Wild. But, here, just to be clear, are a few races that don’t require boasting.
1. Any triathlon: It seems almost every Coloradan is either entered in a triathlon or knows someone who is. Consequently, we’re all incredibly aware of what’s involved in completing one of these races, no matter the length. If you are going to sign up for a tri, though, why not go the XTERRA route? (trail running and mountain biking instead of the usual on-the-road course.) Try XTERRA Indian Peaks, which makes use of Eldora Nordic Center, or an XTERRA race at Beaver Creek in Avon.
2. The Leadville 100: This is some serious shit. Everyone knows it. No bragging required.
3. Your local Turkey Trot 5K: Some Coloradans like to spend their Thanksgiving’s overeating, napping, and then overeating again. Let them do it in peace.
