The Jax Fish House mini-empire is becoming not so mini. The Glendale spot opened last week, making it the popular seafood joint’s fourth outpost. At the new City Set location, sunny, spacious dining areas and huge windows replace the exposed-brick and vintage settings of Jax’s other outposts.
The interior is a fresh step for Jax, but the biggest change is outside: a sun-soaked, glass-rimmed rooftop bar. Known as Hi^Jax, the space will operate as its own entity, with its own hours, kitchen, and bar.
Executive chef Sheila Lucero—a staple at Jax’s other three locations—and chef de cuisine Duane Walker (a former executive chef at Lola) join forces to maintain the acclaimed eatery’s legacy. That means more expertly prepared fish (crème fraîche-basted roasted salmon with beet-braised kohlrabi) and seafood (smoky, bacon-laced shrimp remoulade with fried green tomatoes). And, of course, oysters, served from the raw bar under the familiar, hull-like art hanging overhead.
Bonus: The Glendale outpost is Jax’s first to have a resident pastry chef. Don’t leave without trying Jennifer Helmore’s monkey bread—a light, doughy incarnation upgraded with toffee sauce and Sweet Action ice cream.
Try it: Jax Fish House Cherry Creek is open now, but you’ll have to wait until July 4 to hit up Hi^Jax (catch the opening party from 1 to 4 p.m.).
Still to come: Sunday brunch, complete with live jazz music, is set to begin July 14.
