The Colorado Rockies continue to make up lost ground suffered after a disastrous road record this season, winning improbably last night in San Francisco with a dramatic late-game rally sparked by outfielder Carlos Gonzalez.

The Denver Post points out that the Rockies were heading toward the fifth road shutout in the last 10 road games, apparently unable to figure out the Giants’ Jonathan Sanchez, who held the Rockies scoreless into the ninth inning. Sanchez walked outfielder Dexter Fowler, and the Giants brought in closer Brian Wilson.

On a full count, Gonzalez hit a broken-bat triple, and as the relay throw came into third base, the ball hit Gonzalez, rolled past the base, and bounced over the dugout fence, giving Gonzalez an inside-the-park home run–and the Rockies a 2-1 win.

The Rox are now just three-and-a-half games back in the National League wild-card race (via MLB.com).

Meanwhile, the family of former Rockies president Keli McGregor announced yesterday that his sudden death four months ago was the result of a heart virus (via Bloomberg). Despite the fact that McGregor, 48, was an athlete for most of his life and lived a healthy, active lifestyle, the virus, while initially causing only flu-like symptoms, disrupted the electrical impulse necessary for his heart to beat properly.
