Ever heard of a children’s choir that sings rock music? Travis Branam hadn’t, either. Last summer, the 31-year-old assistant director of the Colorado Children’s Chorale was listening to “Good Old Days” by Denver band the Heyday when he had an epiphany: The lyrics, about enjoying youth while it lasts, should be sung by kids, as should other age-appropriate rock and hip-hop tunes. And the 303 Choir was born.
The 60-member group (grades six to 12) not only performs songs by local bands, but also takes the stage with them. The choir has joined DeVotchKa during a concert with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and crooned with Denver band Churchill. While the teens also perform classics, it’s the jams by local acts that are the big draw. After all, every kid wants to be a rock star.
