New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has thrown his cash behind an effort to fight the recall of two Colorado legislators who supported stricter gun measures in the state this year.
Bloomberg—a staunch advocate of gun control—donated $350,000 to Taxpayers for Responsible Democracy, which is challenging the recalls of Senate President John Morse, of Colorado Springs, and Angela Giron, of Pueblo. Both are Democrats who face September 10 recall elections.
Bloomberg’s advocacy group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, supported the Colorado gun measures, which included requiring background checks for all firearm purchases and a ban on ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. The measures passed the Democrat-controlled legislature and Governor John Hickenlooper signed them into law earlier this year.
According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, “The NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action has spent $108,667, through its own front committee to unseat the two senators who supported gun-control measures last session.”
