Ever since Tammy Cunningham announced she was closing Strings Restaurant after 27 years of business (the last day was April 30), the Denver food world has been wondering what would happen to the space. I know of at least one concept that failed to capture Cunningham’s attention (she remains the building’s owner). But today, Frank Day of CraftWorks Restaurants & Breweries, Inc. (best known for Denver ChopHouse, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, Ignite, and Old Chicago) told me that he is taking over the coveted location. “The lease is all but signed,” he says.
The restaurant’s concept is still being developed but Day expects it to be a neighborhood place, not “top end or fine dining,” he says. “There are those who do that well; I’m more comfortable in the mid-range.” The still-unnamed eatery (which will consist of the dining room and the upstairs, not the ancillary rooms) will serve lunch, dinner, brunch, and happy hour.
Day wants to open the doors fairly soon but declined to give a specific timeframe. Stay tuned for more details.
More changes afoot: Just a block away, Parallel Seventeen is expanding its ever-popular brunch offerings. Beginning on Memorial Day, chef-owner Mary Nguyen will serve brunch seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Among other items, look for bottomless brunch cocktails and bottomless pho.
