2023 rank: 9
Can you tell Denverites like their green spaces? Sloan’s Lake is adjacent to its namesake park, which also happens to be the second-largest in the city. Long overshadowed by adjoining Highland and West Highland, Sloan’s Lake has come into its own in recent years. Its tree-shaded blocks of Tudors, Mediterranean revivals, contemporary remodels, and in-vogue townhomes are in demand with young professionals and families (read: they keep getting more expensive), who are also drawn by the well-regarded Brown International Academy.
A small commercial district is situated at Tennyson Street and West 29th Avenue and is easily reached by bike. Another perk: Sloan’s Goldilocks location. It’s not too far from downtown, Edgewater’s quaint main drag, and the highways that take you west to the Rockies.
Neighborhood Rankings
How we got these numbers: We utilized the city’s official list of 78 neighborhoods (only 73 had enough data to be included), and ranked them using four variables: home prices, crime data, school rankings, and an X factor score that accounts for things like access to open space, proximity to public transportation, and restaurant and shopping options. For more on our methodology, return to the main page.
Your Itinerary
Eat and Drink
For a neighborhood whose footprint is largely taken up by a lake, Sloan’s has a surprisingly impressive food scene. Case in point: You’ll find unbelievable bánh mì sandwiches inside an inconspicuous convenience store at one-year-old CôNu’s Corner Cafe, scratch-made biscuits at Rise and Shine Biscuit Kitchen and Cafe, fresh-baked rounds at Leroy’s Bagels, and some of the city’s least expensive—and best—breakfast burritos at Santiago’s.
Chef Lon Symensma recently gave fancy foodies in the neighborhood a reason to rejoice when he opened the third location of ChoLon Modern Asian and his first Italian concept, Gusto, in the Lakehouse Residences building back in March. Despite being the new kids on the block, they’ve become fast favorites among the locals.
SloHi Coffee Co. pours a mean cup for your morning pick-me-up, plus it shares space with a bike shop, so you can relax for a few while your wheels receive a little love. Or grab a sweet treat with your cup of joe at Petunia Bakeshop.
For alcoholic brews, check out the English-style selections at Hogshead Brewery; Odell Brewing Co.’s Sloan’s Lake Brewhouse, less than a block off the park’s southern border; and the rooftop patio at dog-friendly Joyride Brewing Company, across the way in Edgewater.
Break a Sweat
Even adults might find themselves getting in on the fun at Sloan’s Lake’s south end playground, which received a much-needed facelift last September. The refurbished, rocket-themed playground includes a zip line, pump track, net climber, sand play area, and more.
If the Denver sun is too brutal to play outside, there are a number of boutique fitness studios in the area you can explore. Just beyond Sloan’s boundaries, you’ll find Duality, Row House, High Ride Cycle, and F45 Training.
Don’t Miss…
…the annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, which takes place on the city’s largest lake every July. Yes, there are actual boats racing, but there are also cultural performances; a bounty of boba and bao buns; and plenty of booths to shop. (Did you know historians believe Thomas M. Sloan made the body of water accidentally?)
