Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave is catching heat over contributions she may have accepted from one of Tom DeLay’s fundraising committees. The Longmont Daily Times reports her challenger, State Rep. Angie Paccione, D-Fort Collins, is demanding she return $30,000. she received from Americans for a Republican Majority, which was founded by DeLay.
Musgrave’s Chief of Staff denies the charge. Sort of.
Guy Short, Musgrave’s chief of staff, said the second-term congresswoman has not received any donations from Texans for a Republican Majority. “Every dollar she’s received is legal,â€? he said. Musgrave has no plans to return any donations from any other DeLay committee unless DeLay is found guilty, Short said.
Did Paccione just get the name of the committee wrong? Which DeLay committee did she receive money from? How much was it?
At least Musgrave is sticking up for the presumption of innocence.
“In this country you’re still presumed innocent until proven guilty. She believes that [DeLay] deserves his day in court,â€? Short said. “She believes, at this point, he’s done nothing wrong.â€?
