Colorado’s Wayne Allard and Marilyn Musgrave may find themselves the subject of questioning Thursday when the confirmation hearing begins for Attorney General nominee Alberto Gonzales. In a press release today, the American Civil Liberties Union urged Senators to include in their line of questioning:
Whether the White House Counsel’s office supported the Musgrave-Allard version of the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have banned not only same-sex marriage rights, but civil union status as well.
Rep. Musgrave and Sen. Allard’s proposed Amendment to the U.S Constitution says:
SECTION 1. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.’.
The ACLU responds: Don’t write intolerance into the Constitution.
My view in even simpler: The Constitution is not a rough draft. Leave it alone.
