Brett Reese, the Greeley radio station owner who is airing broadcasts calling civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. a “sexual degenerate” and “communist,” is now preparing to carry a gun to public meetings. Reese, a member of the Greeley-Evans District 6 Board of Education, says he’s received death threats over the broadcast, which he claims emanates from a letter he received from a listener three years ago. The letter can also be found on MartinLutherKing.org, a website run by the white supremacist group Stormfront.
Reese, who has faced intense criticism all week, including a vote by fellow board members seeking to distance themselves from his views, says he’ll take advantage of his concealed weapons permit and bring a .45-caliber handgun to meetings (via 7News). That instills some trepidation into the other board members. “I know he’s gotten death threats, but he hasn’t reported them,” Linda Trimberger, board president, tells The Greeley Tribune. “If I were to get a threat, that would be the first place I would go. With what he has done with the board in the past, I have a hard time believing him.” Reese claims he has filed a report with Greeley police.
Meanwhile, Westword looks at another school “crazy”: JeffCo’s Laura Boggs, who allegedly called school “stupid,” crashed a union bargaining meeting, and was censured by the school board after threatening to somehow undo a $32.8 million district grant.
