Following the murder of police officer Donny Young, which authorities believe was committed by Mexican national Raul Gomez-Garcia, Colorado Representative Bob Beauprez introduced an amendment to a foreign spending bill in the House of Representatives to cut off foreign aid to any nation that refuses to turn over a suspect believed to be involved in the killing of a law enforcement officer. The amendment was included in the spending package passed by the House on Friday. It will now go to the Senate. Mexico has issued this response:

“The Mexican government respects domestic legislation. We do not believe the referred amendment applies to Mexico since our government does extradite persons who commit crimes in the United States according to an international bilateral treaty,” said Juan Marcos Gutierrez Gonzalez, Consul General. “I don’t know of any actions asking for modification of that treaty, which would be done through a dialogue between the two countries.”
