It isn’t typical for TV sportscasters to bite the hands that feed them, so it’s all the more noteworthy to see 9News’ Drew Soicher speaking so honestly about Carmelo Anthony’s DUI bust.
I questioned Anthony’s sincerity after he stood in front of the cameras on Tuesday and, as he so eloquently put it, “manned up” and apologized. I wrote a Bobble Blog stating that I simply didn’t believe him each of the previous five times he publicly claimed remorse for misbehaving and don’t this time either. You see, Melo couldn’t have possibly hurt or killed me or my family when he was involved in a Manhattan bar fight while coming to the defense of his fiance’. Melo couldn’t have possibly hurt or killed me or my family when a small bag of marijuana was found in his backpack at the airport. Melo couldn’t have possibly hurt or killed me or my family when a bootleg DVD surfaced showing Anthony hanging out in Baltimore with a man who threatens to kill drug snitches. Melo couldn’t have possibly hurt or killed me or my family when a childhood friend was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession while driving a car registered to Anthony’s company. Melo couldn’t have possibly hurt or killed me or my family when he received a 15-game suspension for throwing a punch during a brawl with the New York Knicks. HOWEVER, Melo could have easily hurt or killed me or my family when he decided to get behind the wheel of his $130,000 Mercedes and drive down I-25 at four o’clock in the morning on Monday. In fact, that’s the exact same time and exact same highway I used to travel on every day when I anchored the morning sports on 9NEWS for five years. I bet several of my friends and co-workers were driving close by him, on their way to work, at the time.

Turns out Soicher has some painful personal experience with DUI offenses. This post and Soicher’s original post on Anthony are worth reading.
