Alvina trotted off a plane at Vance Brand Municipal Airport in Longmont and began sniffing around. She’s one of several dogs who used to live in a garbage dump in Cozumel, Mexico, but had to be rescued after the owner of the dump evicted the dogs, along with many squatters, writes the Daily Times-Call.
The dogs were taken in at a shelter in Mexico and then flown to communities across the United States, including in Florida, the New York area, and Washington, D.C., says Kate Atema of the International Fund for Animal Welfare. The largest group came to Longmont, which rescued 15 dogs and several cats (via 9News).
Brianna Beauvait of the Longmont Humane Society says her organization will begin working with the animals: “We’re going to be dealing with things like language barriers and different food and that type of thing.”
Boulder’s Daily Camera has video of the animals as they arrived via plane.
