In perhaps the most caffeinated stand against the Trump Administration to date, a local coffee company will participate in a national fundraiser to support the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in response to President Trump’s recent executive order regarding refugees and immigration.
For every retail bag of Huckleberry Roasters’ coffee sold from February 3–5, the Denver-based company will donate $2 to the ACLU, which won a temporary injunction Saturday night to prevent individuals with valid visas being detained at U.S. airports from being deported. Sprudge, an online hub for coffee culture and news, will match the first $500 raised by the first 25 coffee companies that signed up to participate.
“At Huckleberry, we value decency, kindness, reason and love. Usually, that looks like a friendly face behind the bar, someone to chat with no matter what views you hold,” says Huckleberry Roasters co-founder and owner Koan Goedman. “When political leadership goes after those values we treasure, and then doubles down by attacking the most vulnerable among us, it is time to act to support those who uphold them.”
Trump’s executive order, signed on January 27, bars citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries—Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen—from entering the U.S. for 90 days, as well as halting entry for all refugees for 120 days and barring all Syrian refugees from entering the country indefinitely.
Three additional Colorado-based companies have also joined the effort as of Wednesday: Dragonfly Coffee Roasters in Boulder, Amethyst Coffee Company and Method Roasters in Denver, and Bean Fosters in Golden.
So share the love, just like you’d share a cup of joe, and support the ACLU at these local companies this weekend.
