Even in 2013, the word “art” conjures images of paintings hung on the white walls of a prestigious museum or hip gallery. But Boulderite Jen Lewin, who takes her interactive light and sound sculpture installations to high-profile spaces and events across the country—SXSW, Burning Man, and New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, to name a few—is shaking up the conventional notions of how and where we encounter stunning creative works. Lewin, co-founder of and design director for the Kitchen’s growing restaurant empire, debuted four of her Edison Orbs at the LoDo location when it opened last year.
The light fixtures, each handmade with 900 aluminum rings and 350 incandescent bulbs, were so popular that Lewin added two to the Kitchen [Upstairs] and made one for the new eTown Hall in Boulder. “I’m not creating for just one person,” Lewin says. “I love to throw people into a situation of engagement in their community through art.” jenlewinstudio.com
