The Colorado Avalanche have given fans lots of reasons to be happy lately. The team has won its last six games and is tied with Vancouver at the top of the Northwest Division, sitting just two points out of the Western Conference’s top spot. Second-year star Matt Duchene is living up to the promise he showed as a rookie, leading the Avs with 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists). After scoring an exciting, game-winning, overtime goal last week against the Ottawa Senators (video via ProHockeyTalk), Duchene and his linemate Tomas Fleischmann were named the NHL’s first and second stars of the week, reports The Denver Post.
The Avs take on the Los Angeles Kings tonight at the Pepsi Center, and Mile High Hockey thinks it’s all about Duchene, noting that his 89 career points put him ahead of everyone in his draft class and nearly everyone from the previous two draft classes. If the Avs pull off the win, we may be treated to Duchene and fellow Avs star Paul Stastny’s “bang bang” dance. The Post writes that the duo’s boogie is inspired by the television show How I Met Your Mother, but they didn’t start talking about it until Duchene mentioned it on his Twitter feed. “We’re not trying to show anybody up on the opposition,” Duchene says. “We just want to have fun and stay loose as a team.”
