Cheap Thrills is always on the lookout for those who, in the face of bad economic times, find creative solutions.
Becky Swiney, known in her circle as “Rockabettie,” is an artist and seamstress who hears too many stories about how hard the recession is on other artists. Her solution? Jonesy’s Art Bazaar, hosted the third Saturday of each month at Jonesys EatBar from 12-3 p.m.
The bazaar debuted last month and hosted a range of local artists, featuring wares from Swiney’s own handmade rockabilly clothing to homemade journals and gourmet marshmallows. Saturday’s event will feature new vendors like comic book illustrator Robert Elrod, and the Ladies Fancywork Society will be on hand with their crocheted street art.
The bazaar is more than just the art. During the event Jonesy’s will serve brunch, and DJ Noah Christopher will spin some tunes. Swiney says she likes to have a performance event in the afternoon to get everyone moving, so she’s booked a bellydancing lesson for 1:30 p.m. That’s a stimulus plan, indeed.
