Last year, 31-year-old Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, a Leadville woman who flew to Ireland, stunned the country by allegedly participating in an Islamist plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist who offended some Muslims. She supposedly worked with 47-year-old Colleen LaRose, a blond American woman known online as “Jihad Jane.” LaRose admitted to a judge in Philadelphia on Tuesday that she supported Muslim fighters online and plotted to assassinate the artist who depicted the prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog, according to Al Jazeera. She faces the possibility of life behind bars after pleading guilty to charges including conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to support terrorism, and lying to the FBI.
Paulin-Ramirez is expected to plead not guilty, reports Britain’s Guardian, after being arrested in Ireland with a group of alleged conspirators linked to LaRose. Paulin-Ramirez, a single mother, became “Jihad Jamie” online before moving to Ireland on September 11, 2009, with her six-year-old son, writes the Associated Press, noting that she married an Algerian man the day she arrived there. Now in custody, Paulin-Ramirez faces up to 15 years in prison.
