Coming off one of the worst losses in a terrible season, it’s time for the Denver Broncos to address the quarterback question: Should the team let starting quarterback Kyle Orton ride out the final three games, or should it start rookie Tim Tebow? Interim head coach Eric Studesville says Orton will start this weekend’s game in Oakland, adding, “I don’t think this is where we’re at this particular second” (via The Associated Press). But Orton, who began the season hot and at times led the NFL in passing, has been in a slump lately, going 28-69 over the last two games, with zero touchdowns and three interceptions. Orton’s play, combined with the intrigue surrounding Tebow, has many calling for Studesville to put Tebow in the game.
ESPN thinks Tebow will see some play in the final two home games of the season—against the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers—but that fans should be careful what they wish for: “If Tebow plays this season and is a major failure, it could create more disappointment for Denver fans in a season steeped in despair.” A Denver Post analysis by Jeff Legwold finds that in spite of the fans’ desire to see Tebow on the field and evaluate him before the 2010 season comes to an end, one should first look to rookie Jimmy Clausen of the Carolina Panthers. Clausen is 0-7, and the experience has some scouts saying he’s regressed—a possible lesson for Tebow, should the team put him at the helm.
