Janet Rowland finally appeared in Denver, sort of. The controversial Republican candidate for lieutenant governor hasn’t been seen at any public forums in the Denver area for months, virtually vanishing after Congressman Bob Beauprez introduced her as his running mate in August.

Wednesday night Rowland appeared in Evergreen at an event co-sponsored by a gay rights group. Political observers were astonished Rowland would agree to appear, because she became controversial for comments she made last spring during a TV discussion of gay marriage.

“For some people, the alternative lifestyle is bestiality,” Rowland said. “Do we allow a man to marry a sheep? I mean at some point, you have to draw the line.”

Rowland, a Mesa County commissioner, later apologized for her statement.

The Evergreen candidates’ forum was sponsored by a local homeowners association and a chapter of Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

“I didn’t know it was sponsored by PFLAG until they announced it,” Rowland said. “I thought it was the League of Women Voters. I’ve been a little blindsided.”

Now THAT’S funny. I would have paid a decent sum to have seen Janet Rowland’s face when she figured out she had walked into a forum sponsored by a gay rights group.
