Handy Diner, which opened for breakfast and lunch earlier this month, is cozy in more ways than one. The first reason is obvious—with fewer than 30 seats, dining here is an intimate experience. But the second reason only becomes apparent once you’ve tried some of the diner’s vegan comfort food.
It’s the stick-to-your-ribs satisfaction not often associated with vegan cuisine that will keep you coming back for more. The menu, which offers items such as burgers, classic breakfast combos, shepherd’s pie, and sides like carrot bacon, is also affordably priced. A hearty breakfast burrito (filled with perfectly seasoned tofu, hash, and “cheez,” and smothered with green chile) and a cup of local Copper Door Coffee Roasters java will run you just about $6. Or stop by for lunch and order the $8.99 chickpea fried steak with mash and gravy.
The Handy Diner may not be fancy, but the scratch-made vegan eats and bargain prices are sure to make it a neighborhood favorite.
