As Memorial Day weekend draws near, my mind is preoccupied with thoughts of burgers—and, consequently, beer. Needing to satisfy the craving a little early, I headed for a new addition to the burgeoning Lower Highland neighborhood, Ale House at Amato’s, which features creative burgers and 40 beers on tap (plus another dozen in bottles and cans).
Breckenridge Brewery and Wynkoop Brewing Company own the spot, but the suds are sourced from various breweries and include local favorites—like Avery Brewing and Great Divide Brewing Co.—as well as craft options from across the country (try something from Missouri’s Boulevard Brewing Company).
The ale-burger combinations are endless, but I recommend the Cholula-jalapeño burger paired with Breck’s SummerBright Ale. The burger itself is simple, yet it manages a complex taste: A brioche bun is topped with a beef patty (or bison if you prefer) and cream cheese, which has been mixed with Cholula Hot Sauce and roasted jalapeños. A general rule of thumb is to pair spicy dishes with fruitier ales or wheat beers, and SummerBright complements the burger without stealing the spotlight.
Another fine combo is the sweet Glider Cider paired with the earthy West Side burger, which arrives topped with applewood-smoked bacon and Gorgonzola.
Tip: If you can’t decide on a pairing, order your favorite burger and a flight of beers, which lets you determine the perfect match.
