If you peek into Glen “Pop” Helzer’s Loveland garage, you won’t find the Colorado-requisite Subaru. Instead, you’ll see a two-foot-high kiln, a large crafting table, and three shelves stocked with the sculptures, molds, and tools that make up PopTiki of Colorado’s modest studio. There, with the help of his wife, Linda, and his son, Jason, Helzer handcrafts more than 600 stoneware tiki mugs and bowls annually for customers as far away as Australia—and as close as the Arvada Tavern and Baker’s Adrift Tiki Bar. Helzer’s unique designs elevate the island cocktail experience beyond aesthetics: His volcano-shaped mugs, for example, feature compartments for flaming sugar cubes and dry ice. Give your home bar some Trader Vic’s flair by placing an order at PopTiki’s Etsy shop; mugs and bowls in varying shapes and sizes range from $32 to $500.
