Barbershops have become something of a fixture in Denver over the last few years. As of January, downtown added a newbie: Frank’s Gentlemen’s Salon. Like other barbershops, Frank’s offers traditional services, from haircuts to beard trims and shaves. But this grooming mecca is taking a page out of the (traditionally women-oriented) salon- and spa-concept by including an expanded menu of amenities—just for men.

Co-owners and Steamboat-area natives Lisa Franz and Burton Johnson decided to open a Frank’s concept (which was launched in South Carolina) in downtown Denver to provide men with a full-service, luxury barbershop in a guy-friendly environment. Franz, who also owns Berkeley salon Blow!, points out that, “A lot of men I’ve talked to want the experience of having a manicure or facial, but in a masculine environment. They don’t want to sit next to 15 ladies getting their toes done.”

At Frank’s, guys can get pampered with a mani or pedi, brow waxing (to keep that monobrow at bay), and even get their shoes shined. If you need some decompression time, hang out in the Western-style man cave, complete with a padded leather couch and subdued lighting, while watching ESPN and drinking a whiskey (the shop is equipped with a full bar). As Johnson, a physical therapy and customer relations guru who’s used to helping people feel better and more confident, explains, “As soon as a client walks in, everything is taken care of for him. Our goal is for guys not to feel obligated to have a conversation with us while getting their hair washed or whatever—it’s their time to chill out and let us do our job.”
