As much as we love them, caring for a pet can be demanding. Daily walks, grooming, trips to the vet, and weekends spent on “poop patrol” can take up a lot of time and money. Now multiply these labors of love by 24,000—the average number of animals Denver’s Dumb Friends League cares for each year–making it the largest community-based animal sheltering organization in the Rocky Mountain region.
The daily care of this number of dogs, cats, and horses (plus the occasional bunny, reptile or mouse) can add up, which is why the Dumb Friends League hopes to raise $1,000,000 during their largest fundraiser of the year, the Furry Scurry. The annual two-mile people and pup walk—now in its 20th year—will take place May 4 at 9 a.m. in Denver’s Washington Park.
Along with a friendly setting for Fido to make some canine companions, the $50 participation fee includes pre-and-post-walk refreshments, the chance to enter multiple contests (such as Best Tail Wagger and Best Trick), and the opportunity to browse more than 150 pet-related vendors at the Flealess Market. Your four-legged friend might even pick up some new skills by watching the RUFF Flyball Club and the Colorado Disc Dogs demonstrate their relay race and Frisbee tricks.
Get Involved: Online registration for the Furry Scurry is available until May 3 at 5 p.m. for both individuals and teams, or the day of at Wash Park from 7 a.m. to noon. Can’t be there in person? Donations for the Dumb Friends League are welcomed online.
