For 19 years, Julie Wrend fought breast cancer not only with traditional treatments but also by skiing, backpacking, and hiking. “I saw how important it was to her to get out into nature,” says her husband, Dan Miller, “and I saw how important it was for me, her caregiver.” Wrend died in 2007, and a year later, Miller created the Live By Living Foundation, a Denver nonprofit that organizes dayhikes and overnight retreats for cancer survivors and their caregivers. Retreats include two- to five-mile hikes to secluded cabins, where participants escape into nature for a while. (Check Live By Living’s website for details.) This month, the all-volunteer organization needs helpers for a pair of retreats, one to Uncle Bud’s Cabin (September 12 to 14) near Leadville, and another to Peter Estin Hut (September 19 to 21) near Vail. (Most of the overnighters are hosted at 10th Mountain Division huts.) People with therapeutic training, from massage to music, are highly coveted. But if you’re willing to carry packs and cook and clean, you’re welcome too.
