Years will pass before we know how the Denver Broncos’ new draft picks will impact the team, but the prevalent understanding seems to be that Denver did quite well. The complete draft list—available via DenverBroncos.com—shows that seven of the team’s nine picks are on the defensive side of the ball, which has clearly been the Broncos’ greatest weakness over the last few years. Safety Rahim Moore could start right away, and linebacker Von Miller—the Broncos’ first pick—was considered perhaps the best pass-rusher in the draft.
The Denver Post‘s Jeff Legwold gives the Broncos a B for their draft performance, and Sports Illustrated doesn’t take issue with any of the picks. Draft guru Mel Kiper, however, isn’t as kind, issuing the team a C+ for addressing team needs, and a more lenient B+ in the category of value (SB Nation).
The team is left with a gaping hole at defensive tackle, although John Elway, head coach John Fox, and general manager Brian Xanders say they have a plan for free agency no matter what happens with the lockout (Post). For his part, Elway compares his first draft as the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations to a football game (Post), although his excitement extends beyond the locker room: Elway closed another deal over the weekend when he and a group of partners purchased the Burt Chevrolet car dealership in Englewood (Inside Real Estate News).
