The cost of mailing a letter rises today to $.41. But, if your letter weighs more than one ounce, the postage for the additional weight goes down. Last week it cost $.39 for one ounce letters and $.24 for each additional ounce. Starting today, the second and additional ounces are $.17. So a two ounce letter costs $.58 instead of the $.63 it cost before today. The Post office is selling $.41 “forever stamps.” These will be good forever, no matter what the first class rate rises to. I’d say that’s a good buy. Plus, I especially like the Liberty Bell photo on them. Why can’t we do this with gasoline? We’re now at $3.50 a gallon, more or less. Is there any doubt it will rise to $4.00 a gallon by summer? What if we could buy gas coupons now at $3.50 that would be good for a gallon of gas forever. Would you buy it? I would. I’d pay the pump price when it was lower, and use my coupons when it went higher. That sounds more effective to me than the gas purchase boycott scheduled for tomorrow.

In boycotting, people are not altering the amount of gas being used, only the time in which it is purchased,” [Inidana resident] Joseph Greiner said. “The only true fix is to reduce our dependency on the ‘black gold’ through alternative fuels, carpooling, mass transit, and walking into the bank or restaurant instead of sitting in the drive-through.”
