Step 13, a Denver-based men’s addiction recovery center, is collecting donations of gently used clothing, toiletries, and hygiene products for their clients as part of its Holiday Basket program. Items can be can be dropped off at Step 13’s office (2029 Larimer Street) between between 8 a.m and 4 p.m, Monday through Friday until December 21. The organization is partnering with the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel to provide a Thanksgiving meal to 25 Denver-area women and families from the Women’s Bean Project, a transitional job training program for women struggling with poverty. While this event is closed to the public, general donations can be made to both organizations through their respective websites.
Denver Rescue Mission hopes to collect 15,000 turkeys to be distributed to churches, schools, nonprofits, and at it’s Great Thanksgiving Banquet held on Tuesday, November 22. The turkeys will also be dispersed in about 2,500 food boxes, which will provide meals for 48,000 individuals. As of Monday morning, the Denver Rescue Mission needed about 2,000 more birds to hit the 15,000 mark. Volunteer opportunites are filled, but those wanting to donate turkeys and canned items can do so at the following locations through Wednesday, November 23:
- Lawrence Street Shelter (1130 Park Ave.) 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
- The Crossing (6090 Smith Rd.) 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
- Ministry Outreach Center (5725 E. 39th Ave.) 8:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m.
The Food Bank of Rockies, the largest private hunger-relief organization in Colorado, provides four meals for every $1 donated in an effort to combat hunger in Colorado, where one out of seven people do not know where their next meal is coming from. Monetary donations can be made at foodbankoftherockies.org. Food donations can be made at their warehouse (10700 East 45th Avenue), Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Five Eggs, a food delivery service in Stapleton, will donate one food item to the Denver Rescue Mission for every pound of turkey sold. In addition, Five Eggs is accepting monetary donations which will go toward providing meals for family in need. Food orders and donations can be made through their website.
For those wanting to escape the holiday hoopla (or your visiting aunt) for a few hours, Meals on Wheels, which provides and delivers nutritious food options to homebound seniors, is looking for volunteers to help deliver Thanksgiving meals to Denver residents on Thursday, November 24.
