A couple of months ago, I discovered Churchill’s Public House’s very generous happy hour menu. My finding came during the World Cup, and few things sounded better than enjoying good pub food and a few beers while watching soccer—er, futbol. And even though the tournament ended six weeks ago, I haven’t found a reason to stop going back. Here’s why: Churchill’s runs not one happy hour but two, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. to midnight. There are drink specials, of course, such as the $4 draft of the day or a $5 Pimm’s cup cocktail, but it’s the food that’s the real star—and every dish is just $5.

The U.K.-inspired pub serves British favorites like personal-size shepherd’s pie chock-full of lamb and root vegetables submerged in demi-glace and topped with mashed potatoes. The portion could be enough for more than one person, but I found the hearty, comforting flavors simply too good to share with my friends.

Tilapia fish fingers, which come four to an order, arrive tossed in a light tempura batter seasoned with salt and pepper. The crispy fried crust gives way to the flaky fish; drag each bite through the caper aïoli and add a bit of crunchy mango slaw. The pulled pork sliders and roasted red bell pepper hummus are also winners—and will make you forget you’re eating a happy hour special.

Now for the kicker: Order any dish off the $5 happy hour menu and select cans of beer are just $1. Whether or not there’s a soccer game on the tele, you can see how it’s easy to become a regular. 1560 Boulder St., 303-477-1600, churchillspublichouse.com
