Less than one period into Sunday’s NHL All-Star Game in North Carolina, both Colorado Avalanche players selected for the midseason showcase had already earned their spots. Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene both scored goals while playing for separate teams in the game, which Duchene’s Team Lidstrom won 11-10 (via the Denver Post). Duchene also attempted the first penalty shot in all-star game history, notes the Washington Post, although he failed to capitalize. Colorado returns to the ice Tuesday in St. Louis, with 56 points in a three-way tie to qualify for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference (via ESPN).
Meanwhile, Carmelo Anthony is so far the only Nugget to be selected for the NBA All-Star Game, which will take place February 20 in Los Angeles. Melo will start for the Western Conference—unless he’s traded before the game, reports the Denver Post. He could be joined by Denver teammate Nene, who is playing his best season ever and may be named as a reserve or to replace the fan-voted Yao Ming, the Houston Rockets center who is injured. The somewhat hobbled Nuggets snapped a four-game winning streak Sunday night, losing to the 76ers in Philadelphia, 110-99 (via NBA.com). Denver faces the Nets tonight in New Jersey, where Melo is sure to hear some boos, Westword points out, after his trade to the Nets fell through a few weeks ago.
