The Vail Daily is the latest newspaper to rail against three ballot measures meant to severely restrict government taxing and spending in Colorado. The paper’s editorial board writes that together amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101 “have such far-reaching financial implications on our local governments that voting for them would make the economic downturn seem like boom times.”
The Daily also expresses frustration that the backers of the initiatives have not revealed themselves to voters. But the Colorado Springs Gazette is willing to finally answer that question, pointing to the same man rumors and people taking the issue to court have been outing all along: Douglas Bruce, the man behind the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights. Lambasting Bruce for his consistent denial of any involvement in the proposals, The Gazette reports that it has obtained an e-mail from Bruce to his supporters, revealing he has “been involved from the very start,” has “spent many hours” on the measures, and has “knowledge of money being spent on these campaigns.”
Meanwhile, few voters have warmed to the proposals. The three issues are receiving between 18 percent and 21 percent support in polls, writes The Denver Post.
