Tom Tancredo’s supporters gathered at the Grizzly Rose Western dance hall decked out in cowboy boots, biker gear, and T-shirts and jeans on Sunday. Among the high-profile visitors at the fundraiser for the American Constitution Party’s gubernatorial candidate were “America’s Toughest Sheriff” on immigration, Joe Arpaio, as well as television bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman and his wife, notes The Denver Post.
Tancredo, a former Republican congressman, wore his leather vest and Dog T-shirt, telling the crowd of about 1,500 he supports Arizona’s controversial new immigration law: “It’s up to us to tell the federal government, ‘You can go pound sand. We’ll take care of ourselves.'”
If elected, Tancredo will “shake everybody up in Washington,” Arpaio told the crowd, as the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition protested outside to draw attention to Arpaio’s “failed immigration policy,” writes Denver Daily News. CIRC’s Julie Gonzales points out that Tancredo and others are running “campaigns based on fear and hate mongering.”
