The Denver City Council has approved $65,000 in liability claims linked to “unwarranted police brutality” and another civil action against the Denver Public Library system for allegedly firing a disabled security guard after he complained about adverse working conditions. That’s according to the Denver Daily News, which reports that Eric Winfield’s nightmare began after Game 3 of the World Series in Denver in October of 2007, when police beat him badly after allegedly mistaking him for another suspect. The error was made by a downtown club’s bouncer, who wrongly identified Winfield as the starter of a bar fight, according to 7 News. In a separate case, Denver Public Library security guard Kevin Thomas says library officials refused to let him drink water while on duty, something he says he had to do because of his renal dysfunction, a condition that affects the kidneys. Thomas has claimed discrimination based on his disability, as well as because he is black.
