The support might be a week late, but Republicans finally seem to be rallying around the gubernatorial campaign of the man the party’s core supporters nominated last week.

Former Senators Wayne Allard (pictured) and Hank Brown have both endorsed Dan Maes, according to The Associated Press, with Allard touting Maes as a businessman who will apply private-sector principles to public problems.

But don’t tell that to former GOP Congressman Tom Tancredo, who is running for governor on the American Constitution Party ticket.

A fundraising message attributed to Tancredo staffer Bay Buchanan chides Maes for claiming to be a businessman who “made less than the poverty level the past two years” (via Independent Political Report).

The letter, which links to a page where people can donate money to the Tancredo campaign, makes numerous assertions about Maes and the Democrat running for the job, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, who allegedly has run a “sanctuary city” for “illegals.”

Today is the deadline for Maes to name a running mate, notes The Denver Post, which points out that Tancredo has already selected Doug “Dayhorse” Campbell.

Meanwhile, Face the State, which recently revealed that Hickenlooper sold “lucrative” conservation-easement tax credits to political allies, wants to know why the press has been so critical of the “Republicans’ ongoing trainwreck” but has failed to seriously challenge the mayor’s public dealings.
