When Denver native and Confluence Kayaks owner Jonathan Kahn acquired the 5,700-square-foot space adjacent to his shop in early October, he realized it was the perfect opportunity to finally pull his pool out of storage. After 12 years, a failed Littleton store, and three different locations on Platte Street, Kahn is making waves in the kayaking community with the reintroduction of his aboveground practice pool, which now sits in the middle of the shop’s concrete addition, ready for its rebirth. With a foam bottom, vinyl liner, and heating system, this four-foot deep, 18- by 33-foot indoor pool is primed for riders yearning to practice their water skills, even as the weather turns colder in the Mile High City.
When the pool opens on Friday, Confluence Kayaks will become the only shop in Denver and the second in Colorado (after Underwater Connection Dive Shop in Colorado Springs) to boast a kayak pool. Up until now, all of Confluence’s kayak lessons and open pool practices were offered only once a week in at the University of Denver Aquatic Center, where the staff had to work around swim practices and other events. Now, kayakers can hop in a boat at the store’s downtown Denver shop seven days a week. A rotating roster of 10 instructors will be on hand to help up to five people per session with everything from paddle strides to edge control. In other words, you can roll right from the office to a roll clinic.
And this is just the start. Kahn envisions much more for his long-awaited project, which he literally built from the ground up with just the help of his coworkers. He hopes to introduce SUP Yoga classes, add jets to create practice currents, and provide in-store video analysis of participants’ rides on the store’s projection screen. Until then, shop visitors can lounge on movie chairs for kayak and ski film screening parties, and demo kayaks and paddleboards in the pool before purchasing.
The store’s expansion—the space now totals more than 10,000 square feet—and pool opening is the perfect way to celebrate the approaching 20th anniversary of a shop that has long balanced Denverites’ snow and water interests (the shop also provides guided snow-cat trips once a month during the winter). The grand opening pool party is set for Friday, December 12 at 5 p.m., complete with beer and beach balls. Ditch the suit and tie and go meet the team that’s bringing the fun of the outdoors, inside.
The pool at Confluence is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Single lessons are $59, a three-lesson package is $149, and open pool time is $10 for a two-hour session. Confluence Kayaks, 2373 15th St., 303-433-3676, confluencekayaks.com.
