After countless McTwists, double corks, and other mid-air contortions, Winter X Games 15 came to a close Sunday, with more than 114,000 spectators taking in the weekend of events, shattering past attendance records, notes the Aspen Daily News. Snowboarding superhero Shaun White won his fourth straight Snowboard SuperPipe X Games title, edging out fellow American Scotty Lago, who was competing with his jaw wired shut (via the Denver Post). Another American, Lindsey Jacobellis, who has failed to capture gold at the Olympics, also won her fourth straight Snowboarder X title and her seventh gold in nine years, according to ESPN.
Bobby Brown, the locally hyped Big Air skier, finished with a silver, and Kelly Clark took gold on the snowboard halfpipe, landing the first-ever 1080 (three-turn spin) by a woman during a competition, reports the Summit Daily News. The Post highlights the best moments of this year’s games, including 15-year-old Torin Yater-Wallace, of Aspen, winning silver in the Ski SuperPipe—the youngest ever Winter X medalist. ESPN recaps the rough-and-tumble finish to the women’s Skier X, which ended with a nasty crash, a bloody chin, and a gold medal for Kelsey Serwa.
Meanwhile, Olympic figure skater and Cheyenne Mountain High School graduate Rachael Flatt finished a disappointing second at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in North Carolina, although she remains the best Colorado skater, the Post points out.
