The Broncos have done it twice, and so have the Avalanche. And now, the Rapids join them in the ranks of professional sports teams in Colorado that have won a national championship. The state’s Major League Soccer team won the MLS Cup last night in Vancouver, Canada, against FC Dallas. The game wasn’t pretty, but in typical Rapids fashion, they found a way to grind it out. Colorado’s goals came from Denver South High School grad Conor Casey and Macoumba Kandji (recap via The Denver Post).
Casey scored while sitting on the field after a collision with the Dallas goalkeeper and a defender (video via ColoradoRapids.com). Kandji’s goal came as a crossing pass bounced off a Dallas defender’s knee into the goal. “Honestly, I don’t mind how [goals] come,” says Rapids head coach Gary Smith (via ESPN). “If they’re winners, it doesn’t matter. The overriding thought is they must be under some pressure to make that mistake.”
The assembled media voted Casey the game’s most valuable player, but equal kudos go to goalkeeper Matt Pickens, who made five major saves, including one in overtime that nearly snuck in.
