First, the bad news: None of the 15 “cheftestants” on Top Chef season 16—which takes place in Kentucky—hail from the Centennial State. The good news: A Coloradan could still win the coveted title. How, you ask? Carrie Baird (of Denver’s Bar Dough) and Brother Luck (of Four By Brother Luck in Colorado Springs), both contenders from the Colorado season, will be duking it out in Bravo’s digital companion series, Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen (LCK). The series will pit Baird and Luck (as well as Top Chef season 14 contestant and Alabamian Jim Smith) against eliminated chefs from season 16, and the winning toque will be re-entered into the running for the Top Chef title.
While this is Baird’s first appearance on the Emmy-winning web series, Luck appeared on multiple episodes after being eliminated from episode six of season 15. He amassed win after win in LCK until the final episode, when he lost to chef Joseph Flamm, who ultimately won the Top Chef title. “I think competing this season, I’m going into it with a lot more confidence,” Luck says. “I picked up some things that I knew would give me an advantage this time around.”
That’s not to say the new season of LCK didn’t come with a few surprises. “The biggest [surprise] was seeing the other competitors, Carrie and Jim,” Luck says. “Carrie and I had a deal last season that we were going to bring it home for Colorado. Obviously, it didn’t turn out that way, but this gives us a second chance.”
Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen premieres tonight, December 6, on Bravotv.com after the full first episode of Top Chef airs. Tune in each week to see how our Centennial State heroes fare.
Bonus: “Top Chef”-loving Coloradans can meet judge Tom Colicchio and Carrie Baird during two separate events: Baird will be at the Rink at Belmar in Lakewood on December 15 to chat with fans and serve tastes of her famous “fancy toast,” and Colicchio will appear at the Rink at Skyline Park on January 5.
