How I wish I could have been a fly on the wall of Air Force Two last night after Vice President Dick Cheney’s fundraising appearance for Congressional hopeful Rick O’Donnell.
Cheney’s speech was at 6:15. By 7:45 pm, the New York Times had posted its exclusive scoop on the web that Special Counsel Fitzgerald has a copy of notes penned by Cheney’s chief of staff, Lewis “Scooter” Libby, that reflect that Cheney was Libby’s source of information that Valerie (Plame) Wilson worked for the CIA and was married to Joseph Wilson, who had criticized the Administration’s claim that Iraq was trying to buy uranium from Niger. The article also reported that Cheney’s source was former CIA Director George Tenet, which may or may not be accurate.
This was the first report that Cheney was directly involved in the leak that threatens to topple the Bush Adminstration if indictments are forthcoming this week.
Was Cheney blindsided by the news? Did he know it was coming and shrug it off? Did he scream expletives at Libby? Did he call his lawyer?
We’ll never know.
