Sure, you’ve enhanced your massages with essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus in the past. Or maybe you’ve even experimented with using botanicals like arnica to soothe sore muscles. But here in Colorado—the land of legal weed—we are always looking for ways to elevate our recovery processes. That’s why many spas across the state are spiking their services with cannabidiol (CBD) products.
CBD is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. But unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), another compound found in the plant, CBD is not psychoactive (read: it won’t get you high). What it can do, however, is reduce inflammation, pain, and anxiety, according to scientific research, thus making it a dank addition to your next spa treatment.
Ready to give it a try? Here are four spas across the state that are incorporating CBD into their services:
LoDo Massage Studio, Denver
LoDo Massage Studio’s signature service, the Mile High Massage, is completely customizable. Not only will your therapist incorporate different modalities based on your needs, but customers can also choose to add Denver-based Apothecanna’s Extra Strength Relieving Body Creme which is infused with CBD, arnica, peppermint, and juniper for pain relief and reducing inflammation. Starts at $69
Nature’s Root, Longmont
This Longmont-based company launched its CBD-enhanced product line in 2014 and opened a dedicated spa in early 2015. Nature’s Root bills itself as the world’s first hemp-based spa, utilizing the hemp plant for everything—from the robes that guests can lounge in to massage services that incorporate their CBD and organic hemp massage oils. Starts at $45
Spa at the Vail Vitality Center at Vail Mountain Lodge, Vail
The venerable Spa at the Vail Vitality Center at Vail Mountain Lodge has been delivering performance-based treatments for three decades. Recently, the spa introduced several treatments that incorporate CBD oils, including the CBD Massage and the High Mountain Scrub, which consists of a hemp and coffee scrub, followed by a full body massage with Nature’s Root’s organic cannabinoid oil. The CBD treatments are great for people dealing with chronic joint and muscle issues or those who are having trouble adjusting to the altitude, says Leya Nicolait, director of spa and fitness. Starts at $170
Soothing Therapeutic Massage, Fort Collins
This Fort Collins day spa features a CBD massage enhanced with lotion infused with an organic, locally-sourced CBD oil that contains less than .3 percent THC (so it has no mind-altering affect). The therapy provides immediate pain relief and can extend the overall benefits of the massage. See something else on the menu that strikes your fancy? Add CBD oil to any massage on the menu—for free.
