With temperatures hanging in the single digits and enough ice on my car to fill a cooler, it’s nice to think about summer days at Coors Field. A big part of what made watching the Colorado Rockies fun last season was the dominant play of closer Huston Street, who began negotiations with the team on a new contract after the disappointing playoff loss that ended the season. It looks like next summer might be just as fun, as The Denver Post reports that the Rockies have offered Street a three-year deal. Still, the amount of the offer and state of negotiations are unclear. Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd says it’s early in the process, and he’s not sure how things will go, but Bleacher Report notes the two sides aren’t anywhere close to a deal. Citing an ESPN.com Insider report, Bleacher Report writes that Street is asking for three years and more than $24 million, compared to the $30 million the Post is reporting. If the two sides can’t reach a deal, according to the Bleacher Report, the Rockies will find a way to get a one-year deal and consider trading Street before the July 2010 trading deadline. Street’s demands aren’t ridiculous, the blog writes, when compared to the contracts offered to other players, a point most of us could agree on. Street was successful on 35 of 37 save opportunities during the 2009 season and, despite a lackluster playoff performance, looks to be one of the best closers of the game in 2010 (via CBS Sports).
