Denver Public Schools has found a way to save $2.1 million: cutting bus service to Archuleta, Carson, Cory, Gust, Edison, Southmoor, and Teller elementary schools for magnet students, reports The Denver Post, which points out that DPS could face at least $50 million in cuts next year. Already, DPS and other schools are grappling with a six percent cut in state funding from this year’s budget. Denver isn’t alone in looking to buses as a means of saving.
This year, Douglas County and Adams 12 began to charge students for the service: 50 cents per ride in Douglas County and $10 a month in Adams 12. And Cherry Creek Schools have increased walk zones by a half-mile for middle school and high school students to at least 1.5 miles and two miles, respectively.
Boulder Valley School District officials are also bracing for a tight budget year and may face options such as putting off purchases, leaving vacant positions unfilled, and dipping into contingency reserves, writes the Daily Camera.
